Phoebe Milliken, Plowshares new Program Manager

Phoebe Milliken has spent several years living, working and studying in Southern Africa. She first became acquainted with social justice issues as a student in South Africa in1990. This experience led her to return to the region, this time to Zimbabwe, to study international development in 1993. In 1996 she returned to Zimbabwe to work for a small Zimbabwean literacy organization that sought to get books into the hands of children who had none at home.  As part of that job, she began the very successful Children’s Reading Tent program at the annual Zimbabwe International Book Fair.

Back in the States, she worked for the International Reading Association on education and civil society projects in Africa, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia.  She received her master’s degree in International Education from George Washington University in 2001, after which she and her husband moved to Namibia, where Phoebe directed Augsburg College’s Center for Global Education.  This study abroad program focused students’ attention on issues of racism and social justice through home stays, visits to a wide variety of organizations, and study tours of Namibia and South Africa.

Since returning to the U.S. in 2003, Phoebe has taught African history for Miss Porter’s School, curated an exhibit on apartheid for Central Connecticut State University, and worked on an African history textbook.   Phoebe lives in Canton, Connecticut with her husband and their two small children.
